«Xlleb» is a unique project, combining music and verse. The band members operate at the intersection of improvisation and the avant-garde. Music is embellished with declamatory verse, then enriched with an evident passion for both Dadaist and Futurist traditions. Xlleb’s albums and performances are the purest form of art; a somewhat ‘rough and ready’ aesthetic remains both unsullied and sincere.
The Art Council of Russia’s Rutracker site reports: «The members of Xlleb often move beyond the limits of any one category. They play deftly with words and various musical techniques. Their musical/poetic avant-garde work is striking in both form and content. The musicians move nimbly through references to Malevich, the traditions of Russian rock, yet are equally capable of toying with modern, clamorous industrial metal. That same ease extends to experiments with post-ambient minimalism. When this feast of imagery and poetic forms comes to an end, you’re immediately hungry for more, because the result is appealing and appetizing.»
«A Unique Group with a Recognizable Style and Sound»
The experimental project Xlleb first appeared in the town of Orel in 2012, during some rehearsals of a Vvedensky play. The founding members of Xlleb were – and remain - Ruslan Prokonin and Grigory Gavrilov.
Ruslan Prokonin is responsible for Xlleb’s vocals, guitar, mouth organ, recording and mixing. He was born in December 1991 in the city of Orel and graduated from the local university, majoring in Communications. He speaks several foreign languages. Ruslan both composes original texts and oversees some web-based publications. Since 2004 he has played guitar in many local outfits. Prokonin oversaw a music column in the Orel University newspaper, whilst also writing for the regional paper «Omg» (2009-2012). Employment followed as a copywriter, eventually in Bryansk. He is currently doing his military service, but continues to work on a new album.
Grigory Gavrilov is Xlleb’s poet. Born in 1986 in the village of Dumchivo, near Orel, he was educated locally. Grigory Gavrilov was born on 8 May, 1986 in the village of Dumchivo (Orel District). Following a school education from 2005 to 2010, he also majored in Communications at Orel University. From the third year of university onwards, he developed a love for the verse of Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, and Vvedensky. Gavrilov began to write verse himself and participate in literary competitions, together with a long-standing involvement in regional musical events. Between 2010 and 2013 he was a graduate student, specializing in Philology. Currently Gavrilov works as a teacher of Russian Language and Literature in a Saint Petersburg school. He also edits the literary journal «Lampa i Dymokhod.»
Between 2012 and 2013, Xlleb recorded four albums:
2013: «I» (And)
2013: «More» (The Sea»)
2012: «Chelovek iz cheloveka» («Man from a Man»)
Various Orel celebrities helped in these recordings: Kirill Kucherov, Artem Isakov, Denis Boriankov, Boris, Yakhovich, and Sergei Stepanov. A wide range of books and literary texts were equally important to the creative process: Khlebnikov, Malevich, Martynov, Vvedensky, Berdiaev, Dostoevskii, Kharms, Lipavskii, and others. One listener was inspired by these collaborations and combinations to call Xlleb «a unique group with a recognizable style and sound.»
Currently both Prokonin and Gavrilov are busy with a fifth album, which they consider a key moment in the group’s history. Xlleb are looking for opportunities to perform live, since they are prepared for shows in towns all around Russia – not to mention neighboring nations. They are keen to break through in the West - and to occupy a fitting position among other well-known post-rock ensembles.
