Aleksei Taruts: The Noise of Dead Daughters

One of the most stunning, disturbing noises to appear in Russian music in the last few years has been that of "I Am Above on the Left" (Ia sleva sverkhu). An experimental quartet, mapping the periphery of instrumental math-rock, they nonetheless worked essentially in long, improvised forms. As a result, the distinction between order and chaos was frequently unclear in their two albums of 2005 and 2006.

The four members - Aleksei Taruts (Wogulow), Artemii Galkin, Pavel Eremeev, and Sergei Ledovskii - then embarked upon other projects, either separately or together. Their collaborations remain fluid even now, producing offshoots such as Taruts' score for Pavel Ruminov's horror film "Dead Daughters":

The film's investigation of tension has been perfectly mirrored by Taruts' other solo work, such as "Heart Itch (Wooden Stomach)" from his Symmetric Face project ~

Moving from the chaos of "I Am Above" to the finer architecture of this solo work, Taruts has now advanced (or retreated, perhaps) into the sparse post-industrial atmospheres of the "trio" Wogulow, Taroutz, and Vermo. Not to be listened to in a dark room...
